Airbands and Cherry Red GibsonsLOCATION: Ray's Grad Party , PennsylvaniaTAGS: Journey, partiesPUBLISHED: July 2, 2008My best friend Ray's grad party, June 2008. There's a DJ spinning music the entire time, but for the most part we're all ignoring it, opting instead to socialize with comrades we hadn't seen for some time. When the girls among us want to start dancing, the rest of us are subjected to such atrocities as the Macarena and the Cha-Cha slide. After having had quite enough of such nonsense, I turn to some of my more shameless friends and make the following offer: "Four of us; airband 'Don't Stop Believin'. In?' And so it began. I started out singing until our friend Rufo took over and I switched to drums (my natural position). Lauren and Ariel on keyboards, Andrew on bass, and Ray on guitar. We make it through 75% of the song, rocking out in front of all of Ray's friends and family in this town hall, when shortly before the chorus Ray's mom comes up holding an odd-shaped box, saying it was from one of his relatives (I couldn't hear who. Ray stops playing to open the box, and eventually stands to reveal its contents; a cherry red Gibson electric guitar. Needless to say, we finished "Don't Stop Believin'", along with the rest of our impromptu set, with one actual instrument in our midst. Something about that song, and the timing of the package will stick with me, even though I was merely a lucky observer in the whole thing.
