Well! That Was Fast!

I met Van when I went along with Jan to her boyfriend’s house. When we got comfy and started chatting, I noticed that he seemed quiet and was content to just listen and stare – at me. At some point Jan and her boyfriend left the room, to get some food. So there we were alone, and then after a few minutes he just blurted, “I like you… a lot”, to which I replied, “Well! That was fast!” There was a moment of silence then we found ourselves laughing so hard. That was the beginning of a roller coaster relationship.

He did not waste any time, and the next day after we met he went to our school. My parents were strict so we agreed to just meet at Cat’s house after school. Two weeks has gone by with everything seeming to work out just fine, and so I thought. The following week when I arrived at school, Cher approached me with Cat behind her and told me that Van and Cat just got hooked up over the weekend. All that I can think of saying at that moment was, “Well! That was fast!”

Two months after that I found out that they split, and Cat was involved with another guy. It was a weekend and surprisingly Van invited all of us for a party at their house. So there we were doing a lot of stuff, and suddenly I’m not sure who initiated the spin the bottle game. The idea was to sing any particular song to anybody that best describe your feelings or what you think about that person.

It was fun, until finally it was Van’s turn, he stood up walked over to where I was, knelt down, took my hands, and sang “Whatever I said, whatever I did I didn't mean it, I just want you back for good. Whenever I'm wrong just tell me the song and I'll sing it, you’ll be right and understood… In the twist of separation you excelled at being free, can't you find a little room inside for me…?” I was so embarrassed, but I must admit that it was kind of sweet, and yes I said yes to him. I know what you’re thinking, “Well! That was fast!” True, but when you’re young you have a totally different definition of what is fast.

After two weeks I was at Cat’s house (hmm… again), when Joy another friend came crying to me. We were desperately trying to console her, but all she was saying is, “I’m so sorry…” over and over again. Until finally when she finished crying she told us that… Van had seduced her to get in bed with him! I was shocked! After she left, Van came and he did not deny what had happened he just said that he was sorry, and to give him another chance. After an eerie silence, I just said, “I think it's time that you BACK OFF FOR GOOD!” I turned around and never looked back.

It was a few days later that I realized that It was similar to the last phrase in the song Back for Good, which he sang to me months before. From then on that song always reminded me of how naïve I was to think that a person can change – for good.
