If you have a free afternoon and want to do something decadent, go see a movie at the Rex Cinema in Berkhamstead (UK). Not far from London, in one of those little towns surrounded by green countryside and rainy roads, sits "arguably, England's most beautiful theatre".

On a rare mid-week day off, we went to see Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in 'Top Hat'. Booking the tickets over the phone, I was quite sure we would be the only customers in the theatre. After all, who would come out to see an old black and white film (although a classic) in the middle of the week? Don't people have offices and places to go to?

I was surprised therefore, to find the cinema rather full. The theatre lives up to its reputation. Lush red seats invite you to relax. The screen is surrounded by absolutely beautiful gold lacework, and so is the ceiling. The rather unique seating arrangement only adds to the ambience. On the top floor is the 'Circle' - much like a regular movie theatre. On the bottom floor are the 'Tables' - the aforementioned lush red chairs (with swivel wheels, if you please) around a little table with a tea-light lamp on it. Behind it are two 'Royal Boxes' - a private seating area cordoned off, for six people in each box.

The lower level also has a bar attached. You can order anything before the film and have something to sip while sitting at your table. Just like being at home, only more luxurious. (see pictures and other info here: http://www.therexcinema.c om)

So there we were, feeling like we were transported back to the 1940s.  The curtains went up and Fred and Ginger danced their way across the screen. It was magical.

The humour of the film is spot-on and we were delighted. The audience clapped. And laughed. And tapped their feet in time to the music. We couldn't wait to get home so that we could dance too.

This song 'Cheek to Cheek' is simply stunning. The dancing is exquisite and makes me wish I had taken classes. The song, I thought, would make an ideal first dance at a wedding. I've already had mine. Maybe for a special anniversary?

That should give us enough time to practice singing 'I'm in heaven...'
