slyeman | MEMORY FROM 2004

My turn

LOCATION: Dorm , Wilmore

YEAR: 2004

PUBLISHED: June 12, 2008

I have written another memory about a former roommate of mine practicing Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway" on his guitar for hours on end--while I was trying to study. I got him back by turning up "Since You've Been Gone" to a louder volume, but that is, I guess, not the full story.

You see, months later I became somewhat obsessed with "Toxic". I don't know how it started. Possibly the video. But sure enough, this song became one of my all time favorites. I blame the mix of surf guitar, the James Bond feel and antics, and the intoxicating catchiness of the production. I don't know anything else that sounds like this. It's crazy.

So naturally I wanted to know how to play it on the guitar so I could impress all of my friends. I practiced day and night, honing a Britney-esque falsetto that that poor Train Wreck of a personality could only match herself. And I practiced some more. I re-arranged the structure, added some finger picking, repeated the chorus a few more times than necessary. And only a small part of this was done to annoy my roommate. It was mostly for love of the song.
