Midnight ShowingLOCATION: Chicago Ridge Mall Movie Theatre , ChicagoYEAR: 1984TAGS: led zeppelin, song remains the same, concert movie, concertPUBLISHED: February 28, 2008When I was fourteen the local movie theatre used to run midnight showings of Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains the Same." My friend and I desperately wanted to go see this film, but my mother refused to take us due to the late start time. It took a lot of pleading for my mom to finally agree to drive us. It was thrilling to be able to go. We felt shy and young as we took our seats among an older crowd of long haired movie goers, and when Led Zeppelin appeared on the big screen we were in awe. My friend identified with vocalist Robert Plant, and she even had long curly blonde hair like him. I, however, was fascinated with guitarist Jimmy Page. Up until seeing this film my friend had played guitar in our future famous (or so we thought) band whereas I had a bass. After seeing Jimmy Page on the guitar, I knew I couldn't go back to playing four strings again. I needed to learn to play the real guitar, and it was after seeing this movie I started to learn it. People cheered and partied while we watched and listened. Some guys had snuck illegal substances into the theatre and offered us smokes, but we were enthralled by the show and only had eyes and ears for Led Zeppelin. We smiled and said "no thanks." That year my friend and I worshipped Led Zeppelin, even though they were before our time and the band members old enough to be our parents. In more recent years my alternative band Blue Union wrote a song about this memory. The name of it? "Led Zeppelin" of course.
