Those sweet shiversLOCATION: College dorm room , New Paltz, NYYEAR: 1996TAGS: dorm, candles, writing, scaredPUBLISHED: March 6, 2008The night I got Murder Ballads, my roommate was staying at her boyfriends for the night. Because of the subject matter, I thought it would be fun to set the mood before I started my first listen. I lit a few candles, set a stick of insense burning and clicked play on the boombox in front of me. I sat there was a notebook in front of me and began writing furiously as I listened to the stories of torture, sadness and rage unfold before my eyes. The Song of Joy sent shivers down my spine. By Stagger Lee I was lo longer writing, just staring off into the night beyond my window. By the end of side one when the tape clicked to an end, I jumped. After laughing at myself, I started side two, equally as enthralled. After it was over I sat in silence still absorbing that were just laid out before me. I didn't sleep the rest of the night, and resorted to watching cheesy movies to keep me company. I never made the album be quite the event it was that first night, but I still get those sweet shivers when I get to certain songs. Â
