A Childhood FavoriteLOCATION: My Childhood Bedroom , Omer, MIYEAR: 1992TAGS: British Invasion, the Byrds, 1960s, BiblePUBLISHED: March 11, 2008This song has a lot of personal meaning for me. Not only do I love the song, but the Bible verse it happens to be based on is my favorite too. I don't remember the first time I heard this song, but I can't remember a time when I didn't love it. It makes me wish that I had been born a generation before. Along with the Beatles and Motown, the Byrds were my first introduction to the music of the 1960s. This particular song is iconic of the time period. It was inspired by the music of the time period (folk music and Bob Dylan), and yet it inspired a new generation of music as well (think of the singer/songwriters of the 1970s). I can't imagine learning about 1960s music and not learning about the Byrds. While they may not have been as pivotal as the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, they were incredibly important. Today, it is hard to find an anthology of the 1960s that does not include some of their songs. In addition to the song itself, it has always infatuated me that a music group from the 1960s decided to turn a Bible verse into a popular song. The sentiment of the song is wonderful and gives hope to those who are going through rough times. The same can be said for the Bible verse. Often I've wondered what the intention was turning a Bible verse into a song. There had to be some thought process there.
