Speak to MeLOCATION: School, Plattsburgh, New YorkYEAR: 1977TAGS: Pink FloydPUBLISHED: December 7, 2007In 1977, I was in 7th grade. I had your usual dose of top 40 radio tunes - liking pretty much the same stuff as any other kid my age back then. But then I move to Plattsburgh, New York - a small town in way upstate New York with a mix of blue collar workers and college kids. The Junior High School had a music class that was mandatory for all. Like lots those days, it wasn't something I looked forward to. That's where my memory begins.
My music teacher - sadly, I don't remember her name - was a true to life hippy. So instead of playing some classical stuff that no kid in his right mind would relate to - she played Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album on our first day of class. She even passed out the lyrics saying "follow along with each song and let's talk about what you think it means". Man, I owe that teacher big time. She really opened up my music world. In that music class, I became the best student ever - a behavior that was never to be repeated in other classes. I did nothing but listen, write and then discuss my explosion of thoughts and opinions once the music stopped. I never wanted that class to end. And when it did, I wanted the music to somehow keep playing. This memory is dedicated to my teacher - let's call her Mrs. Floyd - for opening my ears to the world of rock and beyond. It was the beginning of a journey still underway. Every time I hear "Time", it sure takes me back.... Dear Mrs. Floyd, thanks for helping the music "Speak to Me".
