Southern ShamrocksLOCATION: The County Cork, AtlantaYEAR: 1987TAGS: Atlanta, B-52s, Bars, College, FamilyPUBLISHED: December 7, 2007Atlanta is a good southern town. I had some fine times there during my undergraduate days at the University of Florida. My oldest sister worked there and my folks were in D.C., so whenever I headed north of Gainesville for a spell, the floor of my big sis made the perfect midway point. She moonlighted as a bartender at a popular place called "The County Cork" - an Irish Pub owned by her BFF. There was a cast of characters working there at this time in the 1980s funk period of the Buckhead area. I loved them and the place. It made me look forward to one day being on my own like them.
The Cork had a never ending parade of Irish musicians willing to play for pints - of which there were plenty. I got to bartend too, or at least work stock, whenever in town, so my overnighters often turned into over-weekers. Sure, the extra cash was nice, but free Guinness, Irish Stew and pretty girls...why hurry? I can't help but think of the County Cork today when I hear some Irish tune, but what really reminds me of this time is the B-52's. My sister loved to sing and dance to them in between pours from the tap. Their song "52 Girls" probably reminds me most of her and my fine nights at the "Cork". I can see her behind the bar bouncing up and down with her long red hair stopping just long enough to scream a "dude, you're outta-of-here" ejection for the one who had too many. Go sis!
