Religion at Thirty-Three?

I remember sunrise on Christmas morning in 1996. I was in Villavicencio, Colombia - a hot cattle town a long mountainous drive 120 miles east of Bogota. Its nearly 300,000 citizens serve as the gateway between the Andes and the vast plains of the llano Orinoquia - a beautifully exotic and somewhat lawless tropical region. I was traveling with a friend's family who were from Bogota. We were going to their cattle ranch deep in the plains for the holidays.

We spent Christmas eve dancing merengue to dawn at a local club on the edge of town. As we started the drive out in our trusty jeep, we slid in the second CD of the Smashing Pumpkin's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. The song "Thirty-Three" played as we drove through the early morning streets of Villavicencio.

There were no Santa Claus decorations, no brightly colored lights, not even a Christmas tree; just churches, bakeries and cafes opening as families readied themselves for a religious holiday. Everything seemed to move in perfect harmony, like a dream flowing smoothly in slumber. It was real peaceful.

So today, when I hear Thirty-Three I'm instantly taken back to that jeep, in that Colombian town, on that warm dreamy Christmas morning with its gift of a great day, a great song and a great spiritual memory.
