It sparked my own memory of when I heard my first Suzanne Vega song...here goes:

In July of 1991 I moved to Chicago, IL to start my first real job out of college. I found a great apartment on the third floor of three flat at 648 W. Oakdale (see map below). It was small, charming place with lots of old wood and views.

Chicago opened my eyes (and ears) to a whole new world. My neighborhood was very cool back then...at least to me it was. Tons of diversity teaming at every corner with cool shops, restaurants, bars and oddities beyond my imagination to include the transvestite prostitutes parading up and down Broadway Avenue. For a young guy with little experience in the big city..it was like waking up on a new and wonderful planet.

I remember hearing Vega's Luka and connecting with it in the same way I was connecting to my neighborhood in Chicago. I was all alive with possibilities and promise - that the world was fresh and new and that I could do, go, be anything I wanted to be. And with Luka, Suzanne turned me onto a slew of other alternative chick singers...ones I only discovered because Suzanne made me want to.

While Chicago was my first real home...one that was all my own...Suzanne was my first real chick singer that I felt a connection with because of her lyrics...not just because she was hot, or could strike a cool beat.

Thanks Suzanne..and thanks Chicago.
