RHMF | MEMORY FROM 1987

In the Spring of 1987, I took a great roadtrip with my roommate and still best friend Curtiss. We departed the University of Florida - Gainesville for the panhandle. We hit the beaches of Pensacola, then headed north to Atlanta to fill up on free Guinness at The County Cork (see "Southern Shamrocks"). Then to the north Georgia mountains for some river swimming. Next was Washington D.C. to hit all the museums; then Philly, NYC and finally Boston - our destination.

We rented the cheapest car on the lot. We played one tape pretty much the whole trip - U2's Joshua Tree. Curtiss and I loved that album. It was huge then and still is today. I remember us belting out along with "Bullet the Blue Sky" as we sang "100...200...and I can see those jet fighters..." Then we'd just start cracking up trying to sound all Bono.

Curtiss drove almost the whole way, I sat shotgun in charge of fun. When we weren't jamming we'd read Steinbeck aloud to pass the hours and smoke cheap cigars. Only music could connect U2's Joshua Tree, a good friend, Steinbeck, a tiny rental car, trashy cigars, I-95 and a girl into one tightly woven memory.
