Cashless in AspenLOCATION: Colorado, AspenYEAR: 2003TAGS: Aspen, Fall, Family, Johnny Cash, Relocating, TravelPUBLISHED: December 7, 2007On 9/11 2003, my wife, kids and I moved to Colorado. On the next day Johnny Cash died. I remember that fall with the yellow glow from the mountains filled with Aspen tress. Certainly nice, but not like falls in other places where there is so much red. It was like fall but without the passion, without the heart, just the pomp. Now I'm not an expert on Cash, so I'm not going to try to dissect his work. And I don't particularly care for country music. But when Cash was playing, I never changed the music because it wasn't country, it was Cash. You can't dismiss that kind of passion, that kind of heart. It's like a burning fire - you can't turn away, you're compelled to look - you have to watch it burn. A couple of weeks later, I sat by the fire listening to the local NPR station play a tribute to him. Outside the yellow leaves were being replaced by white snow. Thinking back to that time, I guess fall wasn't the only thing that had lost some color.
