Before the Gold RushLOCATION: High School, OmahaYEAR: 1979TAGS: High School, Inspiration, Neil Young, WomenPUBLISHED: December 7, 2007I've been a big fan of Neil Young pretty much all my life. My first memory of his music was from when I lived in Nebraska in 1979. That fall he released Live Rust with Crazy Horse and it blew me away. I remember cold wintry nights in the basement of my buddy John Dubay (aka "Doobie) air guitaring to Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black). Those chords just spoke to my teenage wanna-be-bad-ass self. But Powderfinger also stuck deep in me, it was like "wow, this song's about becoming a man...or was it?" I thought, damn, this guy can barely sing, but he delivers such powerful songs. How can that be?
Funny, because it was literally 15 years later in Chicago where my girlfriend at the time - who I actually went to high school with back in Nebraska then ran into years later in Chicago and started dating - would play "After the Gold Rush" all the time. I remember one brisk fall morning lazily listening to the tracks when the album's namesake song played. At that exact moment, I was inspired to learn to play the guitar which opened up a whole new world not only in music, but in friends, lovers and everything in between.
