A Corny Corn Palace New Year

The town of Rapid City South Dakota is located on the western side of the state at the base of the Black Hills mountain range. I lived there as a young kid. I returned with my older brother and sisters and some of their friends to spend New Year's 1980 - welcoming the start of a new decade.

We took our wintry road trip from Nebraska to South Dakota in an old Plymouth Valiant with a boombox playing Supertramp's Breakfast in America album. I felt so cool driving with my older brother and sisters and their friends. I had a huge crush on one of my sister's friends named Debbie. On the drive up we stopped at the mecca of all palaces - the oh so famous Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. For some reason I connect Supertramp's The Logical Song with stopping at that place.

I think it was because I felt so dorky but wanted to be so cool - I wanted Debbie to see me as this happening guy, not her best friend's little brother. I laugh now at the memory, but back then I was the dramatic moody teenager wanting to "know who I was". Too funny. Now when I hear The Logical Song, I remember getting drunk with Debbie in the hotel room on New Year's eve while everyone else had fallen asleep. Man, I totally had the hots for her. Ahhh much better. Honestly though this is a great memory and I mean come on every guy has been there or at least in a similar position. (4/7/2008)
