Takes Us to NonexistenceLOCATION: World Bar, Mickey Finns, Ibis Hotel , Christchurch & QueenstownTAGS: sail away on landPUBLISHED: June 10, 2008No matter which time zone, generation, or even continent, music is ubiquitous and reaches out, touches us all in the same places with psychedelic effects; our hearts pulsating to the samerhythm; ourminds converting to a weightless stream of thoughts. I studied abroad in New Zealand this summer and learned much about the culture at night as I did during our day tours and lectures. Sitting at the World Bar in Queenstown, I heard this song play, and one by one everyone at my table caught on to it. First, letting the intro loosen the bolts and screws that had been keeping our heads tight and straight, allowing them to roll and nod gently like bobble-heads in slow motion. Without realization, no one played a card until a collective breath was drawn at the end of that musical carpet ride. One of our last night's in Christchruch, a Wednesday, we returned to Mickey Finns for another round. I had previously completed my final essays during happy hour on the first floor of Hotel Ibis where through the hidden ceiling speakers showered the teasing beats that extended my productive time there. Once released from the scholarly pressure, I needed only to hear the local band cover Hotel California, and the 12 or so of us in a wavily circle transformed again to an undulating ring ofhypnotized ocean bobs connected by an audible chain, yet simultaneously we floated away, further and deeper into ourselves, to our nonexistent islands.
