Crap Albums Vol. I

Having heard the excellent Peter Cook/Chris Morris BBC Radio 3 collaboration, Why Bother?, I delved deeper into the Peter Cook archive. I had a Pete and Dud album called The Clean Tapes. Now I was old enough, it was time to investigate the "dirty" ones. 

The story goes that Peter Cook invited Dudley Moore to "improvise" some material on tape, which resulted in the Derek and Clive (Live) LP. But Peter Cook had very carefully crafted about 90 per cent of it in his head already.

For the second album, Ad Nauseum, I don't know what preparations when into that one, but The Horn track is very funny from Peter and mostly unfunny from Dudley.  Peter Cook must have felt like he had triumphed again.

This album really represents the nadir. In the earlier Derek and Clive albums, the two men quite audibly hate each other's guts, but as I said, they did occasionally produce funny material out of all that hatred. But this album has nothing to recommend it. The LP begins with the words, "You stupid cunt. You just bought this bloody record." That should have been enough to warn me off listening to the rest of it.
