Pavement Politics

LOCATION: Houses of Parliament , London

YEAR: 2008

TAGS: pavements, tourists

PUBLISHED: March 20, 2008

Sex On Hard Concrete Always Hurts Those Orgasmic Areas (SOHCAHTOA). I learned that at school. Not in Personal and Social Education, but in Maths. It helped me pass, apparently.

E=mc2 - energy equals mass times the velocity of light squared. No idea what that actually means, but it is important.

And now for something simple, but equally important - a pavement. The purpose of a pavement is to allow pedestrians to walk up and down the street, away from the traffic. They are of a certain width (variable), but usually wide enough to allow people to walk in opposite directions without bumping into each other. Still with me? Good.

So why the hell can't tourists understand the concept of a pavement? We're supposed to live in a democracy, but ironically, walking past the Houses of Parliament on my way to work each morning, I am reminded that we live in anything but.

Is it really necessary to amble side-by-side sixfold? Are you not aware that just because you are all walking in one direction, doesn't mean no-one else will be going the opposite way? And why do you think right in front of the barriers in the Tube station in the middle of rush hour, is the ideal place to check your map, or just stop and turn round to have a natter?

So, dear beloved tourists, yes London is an exciting place and yes, do take in the views, but please have some consideration for the poor fuckers who live here and actually have to go to work today.

It is not to annoy the workers - heaven forbid - just want to make sure i get to wherever i am going and on time. will try to do better next visit. (3/23/2008)
