It'll Be All Wight On The NightLOCATION: Field , Isle of Wight FestivalYEAR: 2004TAGS: deafening gigsPUBLISHED: March 31, 2008At the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, The Who were one of the big names on the bill, along with, amongst others, some chap whose mum called him James Marshall. A quarter of a century later, the band returned. I'd seen The Who once before in a small theatre venue, and my word, they were incredibly loud. Now they were playing to an audience at least twenty times the size, with a sound system to match - I had no doubt they would be truly deafening! And they were. The sound system simply couldn't cope. They blew speakers left, right and centre, causing the PA to keep cutting out. Half of the gig was effectively played in mono, whilst the engineers tried to solve the problem. When the sound was eventually fixed, the PA was cautiously quiet. Pete Townshend was less than impressed. To paraphrase: "Is it me, or has it all gone quiet? Fucking turn it up!" Pete was also less than impressed with Roger Daltrey's contribution on Baba O'Riley. Due to the rock 'n' roll equivalent of a clerical error, a roadie had given Roger a blues harp in the wrong key. His playing at the end of this track, was even more painful on the ear than the volume of the band. I was very impressed with the way Pete calmly walked over and told him to throw away the harp, whilst continuing to play very loud and proud. Maybe in the old days, they would have had a fight, but they finished the song, Roger commented on the harp howler, then sipped his tea and carried on. Now that is rock 'n' roll.
