But what I do remember, is the girl with the necklace. Well, I guess you'd call it a necklace. A big old jangly thing, worn over a green jumper, which concealed her ample bosom. Closer inspection revealed that the 'chain' was in fact two shoe-laces tied together and the over-sized pendant was actually a Mercedez logo. Even though I knew very little French, I soon learned that yes, she had snapped the Mercedez badge off someone's voiture and made the necklace herself. Being a nice middle-class boy, whose rebellion never extended beyond wearing odd socks, this was quite shocking behaviour. Part of me was mightily impressed by her audacity, part of me was appalled. But one thing was for sure - I fancied her rotten. I doubt I made much of an impression on her - I was just a quiet boy with a sensible haircut and boring dress sense, who wore his bag on one shoulder. Before I got the chance to find out what little she thought of me, the teacher strolled in, the lesson began and not a word was spoken until the bell. At the end of the lesson, I was whisked away by my exchange student and his friends to another class, where I sat teaching the other kids naughty English words. This made me very popular, but all I wanted to do was go back and find Mademoiselle Mercedez. I never did. Quelle dommage.
