First trip to New OrleansLOCATION: Tipitina's, New OrleansYEAR: 2005TAGS: New Orleans Jazz Fest, Jazz Cafe, London, Jon ClearyPUBLISHED: February 14, 2008New Orleans Jazz Fest. What a time. Seeing The Meters was a definite highlight. Seeing Taj at one of the after parties, another. It did strike me as odd that the Jazz Fest finished so bloody early. When does a festival end at 7pm, for Christ's sake? And in summer too! But that's the way they do it in Louisiana. You pile 'em into the festival during the day, then everyone piles out and you pile 'em into another show in another venue somewhere in town. Taj wasn't on the bill at the Jazz Fest proper, so the only chance to see him was at Tipitina's club. I saw an ad in the freepaper, persuaded my girlfriend to come and see someone she had never heard of (easy to do after introducing her to The Meters, who were bloody brilliant), and we were off. Except so were half of New Orleans. And rightly so, as it turned out. Happy to report, we got in, the Taj Mahal Trio (with Jon Cleary guesting on keys) played a blinder. And the song that I remember most of all, was this one. When he played the Jazz Cafe in London a few months later, he rather cruelly, omitted the song from the set list. Or so it seemed. As it was, Lovin' In My Baby's Eyes was the final encore. A classy end, to a classy gig. It is my favourite tune by him. And when I was rummaging through the merchandise to the left of the stage, his lovely assistant told me it was her favourite tune too. So I obviously have good taste.
