First time I was booed off stageLOCATION: School, then home, Sussex, UKYEAR: 1996TAGS: Led Zeppelin, bass, battle of the bands, school, suffering girlfriendPUBLISHED: February 14, 2008Maybe not the first time I heard it, but the first time I remember sitting up and taking notice, was back in the summer of 1996. This was the era of Cool Britannia (apparently), but me and my bandmates got a reception that was a little too cool, during our performance at a school battle of the bands competition.
The usually funky Good Times rip-off riff of Another One Bites The Dust was overdubbed with the somewhat coarser syncopated tones of “off, off, off!”
Following that rather chastening experience, I trudged back to my house, supported by my girlfriend. But her consolation was not what I needed, so I, perhaps rather cruelly, left her downstairs, chucked Remasters II in the CD player, plugged in my bass and played along with a proper band. By the time I got to BCW, either my fingers were raw or I had finally accepted that playing the Lemon Song at home was not going to compensate for the afternoon’s failure. Or maybe it was merely that as there was no bass on BCW, I didn’t bother playing along. So I just sat and listened. Again and again. And wondered what the Dudley girl’s sister was really like.
Meanwhile, my suffering girlfriend was sat downstairs, bemused by my absence. That relationship soon subsided, but I’d rather have Physical Graffiti available at my beck and call.
