Discovering the '60s

Great track. Simple as that. But that doesn’t fill 200 words, does it? So here goes.

Sometime ago, I decided it was time I investigated the so-called great bands of the previous generation. I had already begun my journey with Led Zeppelin and next in line, was The Who. I knew nothing about them, except that Keith Moon drank a lot and took a lot of drugs. Remarkable.

I remember seeing a snippet of a sixties pop promo for this tune on a TV show and being rather freaked out. But maybe that was the sixties and any rock ‘n’ roll band looked weird, thanks to distrustful TV producers.

So I bought a Who compilation (I was still young enough to think compilations were the answer) and other than the tracks I knew already - Substitute, My Generation, Pinball Wizard - the tune I kept going back to was this one.

Is the tune about drugs or is it about infidelity? Or both? I really couldn’t give a monkey’s.

It’s a track that Pete Townshend always used to refuse to play live, arguing they could never pull it off with only one guitar. Well now they’ve got his brother Simon in the band, so surely it’s time to whip this one out, Pete.
