Girls....Want ...Fun

Every parent relishes the moment their children begin to talk.  They anxiously await every word, syllable, sound.  And they love when they start to sing.

Last week I was driving to an appointment with my 2 1/2 year old daughter Melanie in tow.  The radio was on and tuned to the 80's lunch hour.

As I maneuvered through city traffic, Cyndi Lauper's hit "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" came on.  To ease my nerves, I found myself joining in on the chorus.

"...when the workin' day is done/oh girls, girls just want to have fun..."

I found myself singing until the song faded at the end and then a commercial came on.  Melanie began wailing as I glanced in the rearview mirror to make sure she was okay.

"What's the matter, baby?"  I asked.

"Girls...want...fun!"  she yelled.

I couldn't help but laugh.  "You want to hear it again?"

"Yeah."

I rattled my brain trying to remember the lyrics but at that moment all I could come up with were some lines from the chorus.

Melanie seemed satisfied as I continued to sing "...when the workin' day is done/girls just want to have fu-un...oh, girls just want to have fun..."
