Dancing under the stars...on a tennis courtLOCATION: Whitins Community Center , Whitinsville, MATAGS: Bryan Adams, musicPUBLISHED: February 29, 2008In our early dating years, my husband and I never had much money to do many things. So when a free event cropped up, we jumped at the chance of going. That's how we ended up at Whitins Community Center on that balmy July evening in 1994. The center was sponsoring a free community dance. Since my husband-to-be lived in the area, he had received a flier about it in the mail. "Hey, it's a free night out," he told me. "And a chance to dance with you," I grinned. When we arrived we were surprised to find the dance taking place outside instead of inside. "It's a beautiful night," Mike said. "Why not have it outside?" We grabbed a couple of free Coca-Colas from one of the coolers and found a seat on the soft grass along the perimeter of the tennis court. The crowd was in the middle of getting down to "YMCA". Mike and I tended to stay away from fast songs. With Mike's MS, sometimes he had difficulty walking, not much dancing fast. "This next song is for all the lovers out there...young and old," the DJ announced and the intro to Bryan Adams' hit song "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" began. "Care to dance?" Mike asked. It wasn't my favorite song but I figured it was a chance to be close to my boyfriend. I remember as the song played on I looked up into the sky and saw the stars twinkling, inbetween the blaring lights of the tennis court. For a moment I thought if the world ended right there, my life would be complete.
