The Boardwalk

LOCATION: The Boardwalk , Santa Cruz

YEAR: 1980

TAGS: Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

PUBLISHED: February 12, 2008

I was lucky enough to grow in the bay area. The running saying when you grow up around here is "anything you want is never more then 2 hours away". The Beach, the snow, the City, the lake, a fun park, nothing is ever more than 2 hours away. That meant we spent many a summer weekend packing up the family station wagon and making the 40 minute drive to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. For those who don't know, The Boardwalk was basically the west coast's version of the Jersey Shore. The movie Lost Boys (among others) was filmed there.

It may seem cliche, but whenever I hear The Drifters singing Under the Boardwalk, I'm instantly a little girl again. I can feel the hot sand on my feet as my sister and I chase my big brother across the beach after he'd taken our cotton candy. I can taste the corn dogs and lemonade we would eat for lunch.  I can hear the sound of the shore just beneath the sound of the arcade and kids screaming. I can feel the sun on my face as we watch the surfers oil up their boards and head out to catch some waves.

It's about as typical a memory as you can imagine listening to this song, but to this day nothing makes me crave a corn dog more than the sound of The Drifters playing on the stereo.
