Still Lifting My Spirit

LOCATION: My House , Livermore

YEAR: 2008

This afternoon I was in kind of a funk. I won't go into details, just call it a funk. I was kind of daydreaming, having my afternoon treat, a cream soda, and starring at the wind outside my back window. As I stood there lost in quiet reflection, I heard coming from the stereo, the oh so familiar opening chords to The Finer Things. Of course, as always happens when I hear anything by Steve Winwood, but especially anything off this album, a smile appeared across my otherwise melancholy face.

There are not a whole lot of musicians whose music I would describe as inspiring. There are even less albums I would use that word for. But both Steve Winwood and Back In The High Life, can only be described as such. Since I was nine years old and my mom had this cassette, it has always lifted my spirits. There have been many ups and downs in my life since I was nine, obviously. Every song on this album has always helped add to the good times, and help take the edge off the bad times.

All these years later, as I stood looking out my window, listening to this song, I felt lifted. I felt better, and I got through the rest of my afternoon. Not feeling in such a funk anymore. It's amazing to me that music can find a place in your heart at such a young age, and stay there forever. Always coming out in those moments when you need to hear them the most. It's magical. It truly truly is.
