Sam's Resting Easy Tonight

LOCATION: The World , America

YEAR: 2008

TAGS: Barack Obama

PUBLISHED: June 3, 2008

What a night, what a night. After watching Barack Obama's goose-bump inducing speech tonight as he officially became the Democratic nominee, it was hard not to reflect on how different American history will be taught to my children.

As a little girl I was fascinated by the stories of racial injustice. I used to read stories about Harriet Tubman, and Martin Luther King, and always be utterly inspired by their spirits and their shear will to continue on in the face of adversity. My love for these American heroes is part of what has made me, as an adult, feel so strongly about civil liberties, and how vital they are.

I honestly didn't think I would see the day that a black man would come this far. I feel beyond blessed to be witnessing this moment in history, and that my children will be part of the first generation to be raised truly color blind.

All I could think as I watched Obama speak tonight, was the words of another strong man who fought for racial equality through music, Sam Cooke. "There been times that I thought I couldn't last for long, But now I think I'm able to carry on, It's been a long, a long time coming, But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will".

Change has finally began, REAL change. There has never a more vibrant and exciting time to be alive than right now, today. Somewhere, Sam is resting easy tonight. With a great big smile on his face.
