Nick at Nite Made Me A Daydream Believer

LOCATION: My house & The Shoreline Amphitheater, Livermore

YEAR: 1986

TAGS: The Monkees

PUBLISHED: February 12, 2008

I was part of the first generation of kids raised on Nickelodeon & Nick at Nite television. Nick at Nite played in the late afternoon for us pacific timers, and my favorite show to watch afterschool (after You Can't Do That On Television) was The Monkees. Nick at Nite introduced a whole new generation of kids to the wacky adventures of Mickey, Peter, Mike, & everyones fave, Davey.

I was such a fan infact, that I even owned a few vintage albums (not that they were vintage to me at the time). In 1986 the success of the show on Nick at Nite sparked The Monkees to embark on a reunion tour (which was the highest grossing tour of that year, mind you!). My parents thought it would be a real kick to take my younger sister and I to our first concert, especially considering how much I loved them!

The moment when Davey Jones stepped up to the mike and began singing Daydream Believer, I was more than a little surprised. You see, at my young age, I had no idea about the concept of reruns. It had never occurred to me that Davey & the boys, were actually older than my dad.

Needless to day, my entire view of the show changed dramatically that day. In spite of that, I'm still a Daydream Believer. Whenever I catch that song on my car radio, you can believe that the windows go down, and the volume goes up! After all, it was a classic then and it's still a classic now.

I saw Davy solo once as well, a sort of "reunion" for me with my friends in the crew (who tend to go with Davy on solo tours) and friends who are fans, after I'd stopped being involved. It was great fun. But I enjoyed every single Monkees show I saw during those years! This song was always so important to me. (2/14/2008)

OMG! We were big Weird Al fans so we were VERY excited to see him when he opened up for them. How funny, we share the same first concert memory! :) (5/3/2008)

I was 27 at the time and enjoyed the concert very much. I bought 2 tickets on the day of the concert and took my slightly younger brother to the show. Boy was I suprised when we were ushered to the very first row. Evidenly they only opened the "pit" section up that day and we were the only ones sitting in the very few seats in the first row. Just feet away from the Monkees and center stage, this evening could not have been better and 20+ years later still a terrific memory. (10/30/2008)
