My Night With Elvis

LOCATION: Harvey's Casino , South Lake Tahoe, Nevada

YEAR: 1998

TAGS: Elvis, Lake Tahoe, American Bandstand

PUBLISHED: April 14, 2008

It was New Years Day 1998 and, since we had a few days off of work, we decided to make the drive and spend a few days up in Tahoe. Our first night there we decided to catch a show that was running at Harvey's called "Dick Clark's American Bandstand". It was basically some incredible celebrity impersonators, doing music that spanned the decades of American Bandstand. It was awesome.

When it came time to tribute the one and only Elvis, Dick Clark (or well some guy impersonating Dick Clark) asked for a volunteer. Without missing a beat, I was on my feet and gesturing to my husband. Dick Clark looked at me and smiled, "Perfect!" he said. As my husband was dragged backstage he gave me one last look of desperation to make it stop, but I didn't. This was just going to be too good.

A few moments later the space odyssey fanfare began and out stepped my husband in full Elvis wig, cape, and glasses. What the folks at "American Bandstand" hadn't realized though was that my husband wasn't some Joe Schmo off the street. He was actually a professional musician and entertainer. So when he began channeling Elvis it brought the entire audience to their feet! I screamed, applauded, jumped up and down, and laughed until my side felt like it was going to split.

The crowd roared & cheered. I don't think the screams could have been any louder if Elvis himself had actually been there that night. During this part of the show Harvey's always has a professional photographer on hand who takes photos of you while on stage, and offers you the chance to purchase some or all of them (for a small fortune of course) after the show. After the Elvis impersonation of a lifetime, we were offered our photos for free, with compliments from Harvey's.
