Good friends & Janis

LOCATION: East Ave , Livermore

YEAR: 1992

TAGS: Janis Joplin, friends, girls

PUBLISHED: February 18, 2008

One of my closest friends & I loved Janis. We looked up to the tough as nails, hard living, hard drinking, I can be as tough as a man way of life that Janis had lived. Most of the guys we hung out with hated Janis. So listening to her was reserved mainly for girls nights.

One of our favorite things to do on girls night, when the Spring was turning to Summer, and you no longer needed a jacket after the sun went down, was to head over to the field behind East Ave school. East Ave was perfectly located in between my house and our friend Cheryl's house, which is where we spent most of our time.

We would round up a bottle of Southern Comfort & a portable tape player, with Janis already loaded into it. Looking back I don't really remember how we were able to get Southern Comfort at 14 & 15 years old so easily, but we always did. We would lay out a blanket underneath the stars, turn on Janis, and pass the bottle around.

We would lay there talking about all the things teenage girls talk about, boys, our parents, school, music, and all that stuff. Whenever I hear any version  Summertime, I can taste the bittersweet flavor of Southern Comfort in my mouth, feel the springtime air on my face and the grass beneath my back. On those nights it felt like my friend, Janis, and myself were the only people that existed in the whole world.
