Girls With Devil Horns

LOCATION: Denny's, IHOP, Lyon's , Pleasanton

YEAR: 1994

TAGS: Girlfriends

PUBLISHED: March 19, 2008

My closest girlfriends and I had a favorite past time of hitting a restaurant after a concert or a party for some coffee and munchables. Any one of those late night diner types, Denny's, IHOP, or our usual haunt Lyon's (the only one we had in Livermore at the time). Usually we would be pretty pumped up and would create quite a ruckus. We weren't really destructive or anything. Just silly teenage girls, with VERY VERY loud voices. Something we had developed amongst ourselves was a sign that one of us was thinking of something mischievous, was devil horns.

I don't mean the old standard Gene Simmon's pinky and pointer finger move, but by placing our pointers behind our ears and beneath our hair, so that they stuck out like devil horns. This also worked as our "hot guy" radar as well. It made perfect sense at the time. Really, it did.

One late night we were drinking coffee and waiting for our food at Denny's. We were laughing and rehashing the details of whatever party or concert we had just returned from. Though I'm sure our laughter was a bit annoying, we weren't really doing anything wrong. The waitress was nice, and didn't seemed bothered by us a bit.

Apparently though, there was a woman who was bothered. She had her little ones with her, who were being disturbed by our loud voices. She starting getting snarky with us, and asked us to please keep it down, we were bothering her kids. Our first instinct f course was to say "Hey lady if you don't like it, maybe yo shouldn't be dragging your kids to Denny's in the middle of the night". I think it was a valid point (I know I don't drag my kids out to dinner that late).

In an obvious sign of our age one by one we all placed our devil horns on and began barking at the lady. Her comeback, "what are you guys like twelve or something". This just caused us to erupt in unstoppable laughter. We were then asked to leave Denny's and not return. We would be kicked out IHOP later that night as well.

I loved those girls, I still do. Everytime I hear Joan Jett's ode to little punks, I think of my girls. We've all gone on to be stay at home moms, working moms, business owners, nurses, etc. But I know just like me, when someone gets their blood going, the temptation to put on the devil horns is still there.
