All alone, just my 1981 Ford Fairlane, my smokes, and the radio. I cruised around the neighborhoods I had grown up playing in, took a cruise through the hills that surrounded the city I grew up in. Roads I had traveled my entire life, just never by myself. I was still a little nervous driving, and I was scared to light a cigarette. I didn't want to take one of my hands from the wheel. Until Plush came on. I reached over without thinking and turned up the volume. Then I pushed in the cigarette lighter. I drove through the hills with my window down, STP playing, and a cigarette in my hand. I'll never forget that surreal sense of freedom I felt as I drove. I realized I had a full tank of gas and could go anywhere. I didn't of course, I ended up just going home. The point was, I could've gone anywhere, had I wanted to. The other day I was driving my son to school, I was rushed and had a carful of other kids as well. Once we finally got on the road, Plush came on the radio. In an instant I wasn't a stressed out mom rushing around. For those few minutes I was a 16-year old girl. Driving, simply because I could.
