Meghan | MEMORY FROM 1988

Cruisers

My earliest music taste was definitely fifties and sixties music, especially soul. I don't ever remember not owning a Chuck Berry album, and that still goes today. There are a myriad of memories attached to Chuck Berry and his music for me, but this song brings back vivid memories of, well of School Days.

At a shopping center a few blocks away from my house was a 50's themed diner called Cruisers. It was all decked out in fifties memorabilia with a juke box and was the perfect atmosphere for hanging out after school. My best friend/next door neighbor and I (after finishing our homework) would scrape up just enough money for fries, shakes, and of course the juke box.

She too was a Chuck Berry fan, and we spent a lot of our allowance filling that juke box with coins so we could hear School Day after a long day at our own school. We would vent about our day over milkshakes and fries, with the healing sounds of Chuck Berry coming from that old juke box.

It seemed amazing to us then, and still does to me now, that a song written about a typical school day in the fifties could still ring so true some thirty years later. It strikes me now, even twenty more years later, that it still rings true today. My kids will probably relate to it as well.

I guess no matter how much the world changes over time, there are some things that no amount of technology can change. Like the healing affects of french fries and milkshakes after a long hard day at school. Can I get an Amen?
