Charity wise, Sir Paul eventually came around though. In June of ’79, McCartney & Wings released their last studio album – the back to basics rocker titled, for whatever reason, Back to the Egg. Six months later, McCartney ate the chip off his shoulder and upped the altruistic ante by putting on his own star-studded benefit at the Hammersmith Odeon…four nights in a row. For the finale to his Concerts for the People of Kampuchea, McCartney brought back most of his Rockestra (including, here we go, Moody Blue Denny Laine, David Gilmour, Pete Townshend, Zeppelin’s rhythm section, Small and regular-sized Faced Ronnie Lane, Procol Harum’s Gary Brooker, Bruce Thomas from The Attractions, and “that weird guy playing the tambourine” in Clapton’s unplugged “Layla”) to kick ass and take tax-deductible names for Cambodian refugees.
