Driving MusicLOCATION: I-35 , KansasYEAR: 2002TAGS: drivingPUBLISHED: February 20, 2008Some songs are perfect for a long drive. When I was sixteen I would take off in the middle of the night just so I could drive around and listen to music with the windows down. I particularly enjoyed Tom Petty at the time. When I moved to Kansas City for college, I spent a lot of time driving back and forth from KC to Oklahoma. By this time, I had perfected my song list, knowing which CDs I'd be in the mood for during the five hour drive there. I brought Aimee Mann, Dave Matthews Band, Ani DiFranco, and other groups I'd come to appreciate in college. On one trip, that wasn't working. I couldn't stay focused on any of my go-to albums. I flipped through my CD book and saw the Decade album. I hadn't listened to it in a while, so I put it on. I listened to it like I hadn't heard it before. I drove through rolling fields at sunset, an absolutely gorgeous sight that can be overlooked in the midwest, with Cortez the Killer setting the mood. The air was perfect, the moment was sad and beautiful and crystalized.
