kudzi | MEMORY FROM 2004 The Song That Left Heads TurningLOCATION: Hall , HarareYEAR: 2004TAGS: Teenage, Aiwaves, Registration, Leavers, RockedPUBLISHED: March 28, 2008Let us face it some songs just rule!!. During my teenage years there were songs which appealed to the average teenager unsurprisingly. Whenever such songs were released the next day everyone would be raving about them; before class registration, at breaktime, in between class and whenever opportunity arose. There are the very songs which students immediately set as ringtones, or otherwise left them heading to nearest music store or internet café. When Toxic first rocked the airwaves in February 2004, it was just before the high school leavers dance, a function organised for school leavers every year. This time it was our year. The whole stream went crazy about the song, it could not have come at a better time. As the day of the dance arrived everyone had been going on about the song. It was number one on the list of songs to be played. The day of the dance my stream mates speculated about the dance; who would be bringing who and what they were to the dance. This is what was referred to as the ‘prom night prediction gathering’. Come night time, I could hardly recognise the same faces I sat with during class. Everyone looked all grown up and elegant. We sat for a light supper; chicken casserole and had some punch. In the background was classical music. By the time the DJ arrived we had finished our supper and the floor was cleared for dancing’. Everyone started screeming ‘Toxic, Toxic’. The song was played more than thrice that night. That was the class of 2004!.
