Natural Hair At Its Best!

There was a time around May 2006 that my hair seriously needed a redo. It was in bad shape. I had gone for months without having it chemicalised and dandruffed seemed to have taken a permenant dwelling all over my head. Dirt aside, my hair was falling- breaking by the minute. After saving my pocket money for two weeks after the new school term, I decided to go to the saloon.

I always knew beforehand how I intended to get my hairdone either to have it plated, braided, dyed or to apply a weave or wig. This time I wanted my hair as natural as possible. Straighteners and curling combs have been known to weaken hair and I was not going to damage what was left of my precious hair. I called my hairdresser Jessie and made an appointment. We agreed to meet Saturday at 10.00 a.m..

When I went to the saloon, I simply told her that I didn’t want anything sophisticated I just wanted a simple hairdo. Jessie washed my hair thoroughly- I was horrified at the accumulated dandruff. I could see the difference afterwards. Not only did it look clean- it smelt clean, it felt clean. From there she made use of the hair blower.

For the first time, I had afro looking hair. Those strands of remaining hair weren’t so few afterwards. When I went to school everyone started calling me Tina Turner. Some even went as far as singing ‘What’s Love Got to do with it?’. For the first time I was afro woman.
