King Of The Jews

During the festive season there is always a Christmas play organised by my Church- the Sacred Heart Cathedral. Children of Sunday School going age, are given roles and made to practice for the play usually performed a week before Christmas in front of the congregation. Last year, the script was written and afternoon practice sessions were organised as normal. The participating Catechists met over the weekend and guided by their teachers rehearsed for the play.

This time the play was even more lively. Music was incorporated into the script- real live music as opposed to the childrens’ singing. The new leader, a member of the charismatic movement directed the play. Father Helmes wrote the play in such an articulate manner. The play centred on the Birth of Jesus began with the annunciation; when the angel Gabriel visited the Virgin Mary and greeted her with the jovial news that she was to conceive by the power of the Holy Spirit and ended when Jesus was lost in the Temple.

The play was performed on 23 December 2007. Everyone was overjoyed!!!!!! particularly when Jesus was announced to be King of the Jews. Little John aged seven from my Sunday class acted the honourable part of Jesus. Dressed in a white robe, pure as snow he sang and danced to the song ‘I just can’t wait to be king’. This time in a spiritual way and with a profound meaning behind the words. For sure those with ears seized the deeper meaning!!!!!!.
