In Your Time of Mourning

Death is really inevitable, a phenomenon every breathing being will encounter one day. In some cases, death seems most likely. Take the 90 year old granny almost hard of hearing and barely able to stand up straight, for instance. It is quite obvious in such a scenario that death is not very far off.

Sometimes however, the sad news can be received at the most unexpected and inappropriate time. It is during such situations that consoling the bereaved becomes a challenge. I witnessed such an experience soon after I turned 18 in March 2004. One of my closest friends lost his father who died on the spot in a car accident. I had never had to console a person in mourning, now it had to be my very own dear friend.

'Where do I even begin'?, I battled with this question for close to three days after the death of his father. I knew I had to choose my words carefully, I could not afford to lose him- Kevin needed me and besides I genuinely wanted to be there for him. 'Should I send him a condolence card, buy him flowers or a box of candy or should we go for an afternoon somewhere far'?, I pondered.

In the end I did not opt to do any of that. The point I wanted to highlight more than ever was to let him know that I would be there for him whenever he needed me. The song ‘I’ll be there’ by the Mariah Carey summed up the message I intended to put across in a nutshell. I just gave him the track with a small message enclosed inside the cover and this did the trick.
