Hooking Up Is Not As Easy After All

Back in my teen years, my friends and I had a game we used to play. It was quite a contemporary game common throughout the school. More like ‘spin the bottle’ but with an added twist to it. We called it ‘Dreamlover’. Briefly, the game was about naming one’s crush. In addition, whoever was unlucky enough to have been selected would have had to echo the lyrics to Mariah Carey’s song, ‘Dreamlover’. We would not let the ‘victim’ rest until she echoed the words sincerely, convincingly. The funniest part was, ‘I need you so desperately’, as those who got to sing tended to really look desperate.

One day we had been playing the game during a sleep over. Jenna was the first to be picked on. She outrightly confessed that she liked Victor, a Basketball player from St.George’s our brother’s school. This time my friends and I took it a step further we decided to hook the two together. We told Jenna to ‘leave it to us’ we were going to make sure she ended up with Victor come rain or sunshine. None of us talked to Victor so the first thing was to make him notice her. I was given the task of introducing myself to him which would have ultimately lead the two together.

The day we met for basketball, I felt ready to face him. It was only a matter of saying ‘hi’, so I thought. Come 2.00 p.m. it was time for sport, the boys arrived and I went over to greet him. I looked him in the face, what I saw instead was Jenna singing ‘I want to share forever with you’. Trying hard not to laugh I made a u-turn and never looked back. Fortunately, several years later Jenna has now managed to let by gones be by gones. Time heals for sure!.
