kudzi | MEMORY FROM 2003 He Sang To MeLOCATION: Gate, HarareYEAR: 2003TAGS: Serenading, anniversary, melodic, spirits, smellingPUBLISHED: February 13, 2008In 2003 towards the end of May, I fell in love with a recent high school graduate. Did he not just have the sweetest of hearts!- he was affectionate, gentle, kind but best of all he had a flare for music. Mark had been richly blessed in many areas; arts and crafts, gardening, sports, cooking, electronics but his singing took the cup. Hearing him sing was all I needed to revive my spirits after a long and hectic day. His melodic voice was enough to soften the hardest of hearts.
His charming, witty personality aside, Mark had little tendencies so called ‘bad habits’ which eventually outnumbered his appealing qualities. There were so many things I felt he took for granted like remembering my birthday and arriving on time for most of our dates. These bad tendencies continued to accumulate during the several months we were together which unfortunately led to our break-up
I still have vast memories of my ex however, sometimes radiant, other times dreadful, whilst sometimes I am neither moved to smiles nor tears. One thing I will always remember him is for serenading me. Throughout my twenty-one years of existence, Mark is the first guy to have ever sang to me- slowly, passionately, soothingly, amicably.
On December 21st that year, I woke up in the pink of health and felt the joy only a lark could know. Mark seemed clueless as to why I happened to be joyous during the few hours we had been together that day. It then hit me- he had no idea that it was meant to be a special, ceremonious day for the both of us.
The day ended without any acknowledgement from him that it happened to be our anniversary. This left me red in the face, I decided to call it quits. I could not believe that he forgot our very first anniversary. How can he forget such a crucial occassion, I bled silently. The very next day I found him waiting outside our yard on my way home from church.
With a bouquet of sweet smelling roses in one hand, and a card on the other he released the lyrics to the song ‘If You Leave Me Now’ sincerely. His soft voice flew gracefully for close to two minutes. I was deeply touched, I could not help but embrace him afterwards. Even though we failed to reconcile our differences in the long run, I will always remember him for this.
