Giving Blood At Last!!!

LOCATION: Hospital , Harare

I have always been a health freak. I have fears about drowning, falling off a cliff and anything else you can think of but my greatest fear was faced the moment I gave blood. For weeks I had been torn between two options, I wanted to do the noble thing- to help all those patients shot of blood but I was also fearful.

I really had nothing to worry about as my weight was just right 50 kg and I had no health problems but this was not enough to dispel my fear. I soon came to understand the source of the phobia. My aunt, a nurse had died of Aids from needle pricking. I watched her health deteriorate slowly and painfully with the other family members.

Within a shot space of times she had lost tremendous weight, her gorgeous hair fell off and pimples filled her entire body. What if something goes amiss during the blood transfusion, or if an unsterilised needle is used?, I contemplated. Some of my friends who had given blood gave me the needed courage. I went and I gave blood. I had been expecting to feel week and faint afterwards. Instead after the procedure I felt good- so alive.

I realised that my fear had been irrational. I felt cheerful for having given blood and I wore the tag, ‘be nice to me I gave blood today’ with attitude. I went home and I blasted the song ‘I feel good’. I know give blood every so often. The journey is the reward and I am proud I  took the route.
