Farewell Junior School

It was always tradition at my junior school for all those in their final year to fundraise for a function known as the final School Leavers Party. The money had always been realized in the form of a concert. Every year, school leavers would set a day aside and entertain the whole school for a fee. It was a show no-one dared to miss.

Then came our year in 1998. Towards the end of October, after our last junior examinations, my friends and I formed our own little ‘clique’ and began rehearsing for the big day. For close to two hours we would get together on a daily basis even over the weekend.

After going through a long list of various songs, we decided to dance to ‘I Get So Lonely’ by Janet Jackson. We practiced and polished every one of our moves until they were absolutely perfect. It was a most laborious period but we had fun all the same, laughing at our mistakes and just being ‘silly’.

Hannah, Trish, Rebecca, Trish, Daphne, Cherish, Rutendo and myself could not have come up with a better song. We looked hip in our uniform dressing comprised of black jeans, white tops and the matching shades when the big day arrived.

The entire school loved our performance. The very next day after the show, we found groups of friends getting together during breaktime trying to emulate our moves. I always think of my last few days, whenever I play this song. It brings back the fondest of memories.
