Civies Day With A Difference

In Zimbabwe, my natural heritage it is compulsory for all junior and high school students to wear uniforms. With the exception of independent colleges most teenagers are either dressed in red, blue, green, yellow or an assortment of all colours during the school term. There is one day each term students of primary school going age look forward to however- civies day. This is mainly because it is that one day of the term that junior school pupils come dressed in their own attires, and do away with uniforms for once.

When I was still in primary, I always looked forward to this day and my mother was always sure to be a high quality outfit specifically for the day. I would find my other classmates dressed in all sorts of attires, three quarter tights, denim jeans, satin dresses, suede pants- the list is endless. The most unbelievable thing happened in 1998. I was in my final year of junior school. The first term of the year the boys from my stream shocked us all. They took initiative and came up with a theme when it was civies day. I got up and got ready for school.

As I entered the gate, I expected to see a variety of clothing attires but the guys were dressed in black- not the jeans, tops and casual wear youngsters are associated with but the real professional look. They looked like business executives ready to execute an important meeting. They were the Men In Black. To this day I am still trying to figure out who played the eminent role of ‘Will Smith’!.
