Caught Littering

It was always the school policy for students to avoid littering. But it was also the student’s policy to rebel. We actually had a saying ‘rules are meant to be broken’ and indeed they were. Though I must admit there be some days we went wild as students and brought nose rings, dyed hair and all the forbidden stuff. This particularly happened on the last day of school when everyone was all excited about the holiday- another term down!.

When we closed in April 2004 my friends and I spent the first week of the holiday in detention after getting a little too carried away. We arrived early in the morning and started cleaning the classroom. This was always done- all classrooms had to be cleaned before being locked up for the holiday. So we went and got brooms, soap and drying cloths and begin cleaning along with the rest of the class.

Everyone made an effort to leave the classroom spick and span. The mission was significantly accomplished. The windows were left spotlessly clean, all the dust that had accumulated on the ceiling was no more and a new fragrance filled all corners of the room. Then came the part everyone had been dreading- offloading the rubbish. Jenna from my circle of friends lamented ‘Oh let’s just do it, get it over and done with guys’. We really had no choice as we had to be in time for assembly.

The five of us went- but the compost was too far. No one wanted to walk such a great distance so we decided to talk a short. As they say a short cut is often a wrong cut and we were caught trying to litter outside one of the Labs by one of the nuns talking a ‘holy’ walk. Not knowing what was coming next I silently began to sing ‘Lord Have Mercy’.
