Cake Anyone?

The world would be a much brighter place, if there were more giving souls. My heart bleeds whenever I see multitudes of children out in the streets, dressed in rags, begging for crumbs. They could be getting an education, enhancing a sport or developing some other talent. What a waste!. Not only do I feel for the young but the old, in fact all the destitute. In my final year of school, the interact club- a charity organisation organised a cake sale in a bid to help the children housed at an orphanage.

It probably sounds like a cake sale would have been barely sufficient to generate adequate funds but most students loved cake- chocolate especially and they could never be too many cakes on sale. Together with the other committee members we put up a notice about the cake sale on the notice to be held the following Friday during breaktime. I was a committed baker and I had no problems making my favourite recipe; chocolate layer cake.

The day of the cake sale, I brought my cake rich in chocolate and we organised the table and laid out the cakes just before break. There were all kinds, strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, scones, biscuits, doughnuts. Come break time a horde of teenagers surrounded the table, some with huge lunch boxes ready to be filled with cakes.

To make it interesting, the committee decided to come up with a little something extra. There was music playing in the background so ‘You Might Need Somebody’. The sales were terrific. We ended up realising more than double of what we had anticipated. The kids at the shelter were overjoyed. At least all of them could now have new uniforms.
