Best Friend Leaves for Australia

My best friend and I had been together for close to six years. Our friendship had blossomed throughout the years. We shared our innermost secrets, sat together in between class, exchanged clothing, spent the bulk of our weekends playing pool and did everything else expected of a healthy friendship.

Then came the most shocking news that left me on the edge for quite some time. She told me that her family was planning on relocating to Australia permanently. Although I was happy for her, I also felt sad at the thought of not having her around. She had always been only a phone call away but how was I going to deal with her being miles away.

I began to question whether the departure would mean the end of our friendship. She too was clueless as to whether it would be possible for her to come back for a holiday which made the situation even more unbearable. In between my fears my best friend gave me just what I need- reassurance that our friendship would continue. She dedicated the song- ‘Anytime You Need A Friend’ to me on national radio.

I then knew why she had been wanting me to stay tuned in throughout the six O’clock Stacey show held every Sunday. The track ‘Anytime You need a friend’ truly meant that her departure could only strengthen our friendship. ‘Out of Sight out of mind’ no longer dominated my mind.

Instead the saying, ‘Absence makes the heart grow fonder’, became the knew notion. Everytime I listen to the song, I can’t help but feel just how strong our friendship has grown ever since.
