Some songs just have a knack of bringing people together. Five’s everybody get up ruled in my early teen years. School assembly was a formal affair every Monday. This sucked- the procedure was just too rigid. Fortunately, the school officials gave us the chance to meet as students at least thrice each term. We normally had such assemblies before exams when tensions had been piling up, before half term break and during the last week of school. Those in charge knew how to make us chill out.

The school disciplinarians would come up with little ‘skits’.  I enjoyed these little hourly get together’s were it would just be the students. Nevermind that they be in their final year faced with critical exams at the end of the year. Normally we were entertained in the form of a play and sometimes when the disciplinarians were up to it we would make fun of the school teachers.

There was actually a list of ‘chops’ which circulated around the school but the best was the list of worst dressed tutors. We’d begin by dancing to ‘Everybody Get Up’. The whole school- all thousand of us would be in the hall getting up and down. It was such a popular way of bringing everyone together- just what we needed to let go of all apprehensions. My high school was amazing!!!!!!.

Fine it was a Church school but the nuns weren’t oblivious to the fact that we needed to live!!.. We were allowed to act like typical ‘teenagers’ though within reasonable boundaries. Can’t wait for this years reunion, we have to dance to the song including those already with kids and spouses.
