alanis stole my innocenceLOCATION: Waiting at the Doctor's Office, Basking RidgeYEAR: 1995TAGS: losing innocence, you oughta know, dirty lyricsPUBLISHED: February 12, 2008Ever since she cut her hair, found Buddha and started smiling it's hard to remember Alanis in her prime. But if I try hard enough I can remember the time when she was angry and gritty and real. "You Oughta Know" was all over Z-100, the pop music station in Jersey. When it came on I'd turn up the volume and scream along to the music. When my neighbor got the CD, we memorized the lyrics and played it on repeat. Also, you should know that as a child I loved to perform. I was constantly singing, dancing and putting on shows for my family. I usually sang Celine Dion, The Beatles, or the Lion King Soundtrack. The day I introduced Alanis into my lineup is a day that I will never forget. Mom and I were waiting in my pediatrician's office (bright yellow walls bordered with red trucks, posters of mickey mouse and all). I decided to sing "You Oughta Know" for Mom. The color left her face about four lines into the song. When I got to the refrain she stopped me and said, "Kelly, do you know what it means to go down on somebody?" After a long car ride full of questions I found myself with a queasy stomach and more knowledge than I ever wanted to know. Alanis stole my innocence.

I find it hard to believe that Alanis would have a relationship with him at all, let alone go a little psycho over the breakup, but hey, reality is weird sometimes. Either way, I always loved this song... It was one of the first truly angry songs I experienced, in a good way. (4/8/2008)
